A Conceptual Analysis of Nurses¡¯ Cultural Competence in Care of Foreign Inpatients

Abstract

|
Purpose: The aim of this study was to clarify the cultural competence of nurses who care for foreign inpatients in attempt to resolve medical inequality.
Methods: Walker and Avant¡¯s concept analysis process was used in this study based on antecedent studies.
Results: The components of cultural competence of nurses who care for foreign inpatients are recognition of multiculturism, multicultural communication, support from organization, self-efficacy, cultural sensitivity, and empathy. The antecedents are multicultural society and deficiency of cultural competency education for nurse. The consequence of such competency is culturally aware nursing care.
Conclusion: The aim of cultural competence in nurses who care for foreign inpatients is to promote health and well-being of patients from many cultures based on organizational support, recognition of cultural characteristics, and respectful and empathic attitudes. To make this possible, nurses need cultural competency education and institutional support. Culturally competent nursing is expected to improve quality care.
